MACQUARIE RIVER RIDE – 6.7KM RETURN

Start & finish: Bathurst Visitor Information Centre

Places of interest: This ride will take you past several  old buildings, including the Bathurst

Showground, Woolstone, Holy Trinity Church, Sydney Stephen’s House.

Take: Drinks, snacks, sunscreen, insect

repellent and a lock

This ride is an easy 6.7km flat ride, mostly on bike paths or quiet roads. There are only a couple of very short inclines. You will pass a playground & skate park in Berry Park and there are several spots to have a picnic on the Macquarie River.

Start at the Bathurst Visitor Information Centre, (parking, café, toilets). Follow the cycleway east alongside the highway, crossing Havannah Street. Continue over the bridge on the cycleway, which goes under the bridge to Berry Park (1km), where there are toilets, a playground & skatepark. Join the cycleway now on the northern side of highway past the hockey fields and at 1.55km turn left past Woolstone and continue to Gilmour Street. Turn left into Gilmour Street at Holy Trinity Church and then first left into Church Lane (2.4km). At the river turn right (3.4km) before turning left (3.65km) back onto the cycleway. Follow the cycleway around the river, over the bridge and at the top of the sharp incline (4.2km) turn left again where the cycleway goes back along the river. Go under the old Denison Bridge, circle around and then over it. You are now back in Berry Park and you will continue back to the Visitors Information Centre.

SOUTH BATHURST RIDE – 5.6KM OR 6.7KM

Start & finish: Chifley Home, 10 Busby Street

Places of interest: Chifley Home, St Barnabus Anglican Church, Mackillop College, St Vincent’s Hospital, St Josephs Mount – built in 1878, St Stanislaus College

Start at Chifley Home, 10 Busby Street Bathurst. Cycle Rocket Street in front of St Barnabas’ Church. Cross the Railway bridge and turn left into Alpha Street. Follow to the end and turn right into Russell Street. Cycle past Mackillop College and St Vincents Hospital to Wrights Corner, turning right into Lloyds Road. Follow Vale Road, cross the railway line and turn right into Bant Street. Cycle to Busby Street on your left and you are back where you started. This ride can be extended by continuing up Busby Street to Havannah Street passing St Jospehs Mount. St Stanislaus College will be at the junction of Busby and Havannah Street’s. Turn right and travel downhill turning right into Brilliant Street. Cycle until the road joins Busby Street and you are back where you started.

LAFFING WATERS RIDE – 14KM or 18KM

Start at the Visitor Information Centre and taking the exit out towards the highway, follow the dual cycle/walk path back over the bridge for almost a kilometer. Take the path leading off to the right under the main bridge and across to Berry Park rest area adjacent to the old bridge (now closed to motor traffic). At the old bridge take River Road on your right and continue along it, turning right at the end in Stephen’s Lane. Turn left where Stephen’s Lane joins Gilmour Street at a T-junction. Continuing along Gilmour Street, cross the Gilmour Street/Hereford Street roundabout and continue on to the Laffing Waters turnoff (4.2km). This turnoff is marked as “Laffing Waters Lane’ and is just prior to Tyer’s Park Raceway (horse racing) and where Gilmour Street joins the Sofala Road. Continue straight ahead. The road rises gradually, becoming steeper as you go along. Just near the end of the steep section, look for a large sign (Laffing Waters Estate) and a road to the left marked Fleming Drive. Turn left into Fleming Drive and cycle just past the top of the rise. Take a rest here for a good view over the river valley and the city of Bathurst, noting the early city layout. Return from here to your starting point (14km round trip) or continue on the end of Fleming Drive (18km round trip).

LIMEKILNS RIDE – 18KM RETURN

Start & finish: Bathurst Visitor Information Centre

Places of interest: Denison Bridge

Take: Drinks, snacks, sunscreen

Start at the Bathurst Visitor Information Centre. Follow the cycleway east alongside the highway, crossing Havannah Street with care. Continue over the bridge on the cycleway, which goes under the bridge to Berry Park, where there are toilets & a playground. Join the cycleway now on the northern side of highway, ride to 1st of lights at Gilmour Street where cycleway finishes. Cross Gilmour Street and walk bikes along footpath in front of shops, turning left into Boyd Street, passing Kelso Shopping Centre, where there are toilets. Follow Boyd Street, which becomes Limekilns Road at the Kelso High School. Continue on, as the houses give way to fields and properties, to the Sheep & Cattle Drome entrance, which is 8.3km from the lights. Return along Limekilns Road to Marsden Lane and turn right. Cycle over a small rise then downhill to the roundabout. Continue across the roundabout into Hereford Street and join the cycleway at the car park on the northern side of the river. Follow this cycleway along the river to the T-junction at River Road. Turn right and continue by the riverto the old Denison Bridge over the Macquarie River. Rejoin the cycleway there, and retrace your ‘wheeltracks’ through Berry Park, under the bridge and alongside the highway to enjoy well-earned refreshments at the Visitor Information Centre.

BATHURST 11 MILE DRIVE RIDE –

16KM – 20.5KM RETURN

Start & finish: Berry Park rest area

Places of interest: Peace Park, Eglinton, Blackdown Estate

Take: Drinks, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent and a lock

Start at Berry Park rest area just off the Great Western Highway and before the main part of Bathurst City. Follow the dual cycle/walk path through the rest area for about 250 metres to the old bridge (now closed to vehicles). Cross and take the path to the left back under the bridge, into Peace Park and parallel to the river. At the end of the cycleway, turn right into Stanley Street and take the first left into Rankin Street. At the first intersection turn right into Morrissett Street. Another dual cycle/walk path starts at the end of Morrissett Street and continues all the way to Eglinton. The dual cycle/walk path finishes at the end of the bridge over the river at Eglinton. Continue north from the roundabout up Hamilton Street. A shop is in the village. Turn left off Hamilton Street into Park Street. Retrace your route (16km round trip), or alternatively return via the Eleven Mile Drive Circuit (20km round trip). To do this, continue up Hamilton Street to the intersection with Eleven Mile Drive and turn right. Along the way pass the historic Blackdown property (12.8km). Continue to the Sofala Road intersection and turn right, then to the next roundabout and turn right again. Join the dual cycle/walk path on the left. Going up the little pinch after the low level bridge across the Macquarie River in Hereford Street, rejoin the cycleway into Peace Park. Return to Berry Park.
